Resources- FAQ
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser targets the darkness of the melanin pigment in the hair follicle. Since melanin is only produced in the growth phase of the hair, the laser must target the hair follicle during this cycle. At any given time, 20-40% of the hair in a particular area may be in a growth phase. Therefore, more than one treatment needs to be scheduled, preferably at 6-8 week intervals. With multiple treatments we can ensure that all hair follicles are being disabled.
Can all hair and skin colors be treated effectively with laser?
While laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any skin color, the color of the hair is the most important factor. The laser is attracted to the melanin (the dark pigment) in the hair follicle. Thus, darker hair is treated most effectively. If your hair has a blonde, red, or dark gray root, you may not be a good candidate for laser hair removal.
Do you offer free consultations?
Absolutely. We believe that a consultation is important for any client considering laser hair removal. We will perform a test spot so the client can see how the laser feels and we can answer any questions so the client can better understand what the laser can do. We can also determine if you are a good candidate for laser before you commit to any treatment.
Is laser hair removal painful?
While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, the majority of clients do not think it is painful. Clients find laser hair removal with our laser much more tolerable than waxing. Our laser is equipped with a DCD (Dynamic Cooling Device) that makes the treatment both comfortable and safer to the skin than other lasers. In addition, we offer the Zimmer Cryo5 cooler as an added cooling device which helps decrease the sensation of pain. This device blows cold air onto the skin and you actually control how much air you desire because you get to hold the cooling arm and direct its flow!
Does my hair need to be “grown out” before my treatment?
No. We actually recommend that you shave the area to be treated. Waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or any other method that removes the root of the hair must be discontinued at least six weeks prior to treatment. Since the laser targets the root of the hair, it must be present for the treatment to be effective.
What areas of the face or body cannot be treated with laser?
None. All areas of the face or body can be treated with the GentleYAG Laser.
Will I have to use any topical numbing preparations before my treatment?
Absolutely not. Most patients experience little discomfort at the treatment site because of the Dynamic Cooling Device. The DCD (Dynamic Cooling Device) our laser is equipped with eliminates the need for most topical numbing preparations. Before every laser pulse, a cryogen (cooling agent) is automatically sprayed onto the skin within the laser field that protects and partially numbs that area. This makes the treatment safer and more comfortable. However, the degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Topical anesthesia may be requested based on individual preferences and tolerances. Be sure to discuss this with us in advance of the laser treatment.
What are the risks involved with laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is a 'lunch time' procedure. There is no recovery or down time. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately. These lasers do not injure the dermis so the risks are extremely low. As with any procedure, you will be given an informed consent to read over that explains all the possible risks.
Do you sell packages, and is laser hair removal affordable?
We do sell packages - however, we never insist on payment of multiple treatments up front. Every patient differs in the way that their hair responds to the treatment. Any given area typically requires an average of six treatments but this can vary from person to person. This is why we price per treatment. We are confident in the way our laser performs and there is no reason to require clients to pay up front before seeing the results of a treatment. However, paying for a package will save you money as we sell 6 treatments for the price of 5. You can ask us about our Refund Policy in case you don't use all 6 treatments.
Are there medications that I should be aware of that may cause problems with laser therapy?
Yes, there are many medications that are "photosensitizing." In other words, these particular medications can cause you to be sensitive to sunlight and can cause you to sunburn if you are exposed to ultraviolet light. Even with small amounts of sun exposure, a severe sunburn can occur if you take these particular medications! It is very important to let your skin care consultant know if you are on any of these medications. Click here to view a list of "photosensitizing" medications.
Is there a licensed physician on-site?
Yes. Juvenis Laser & Skin Care Center is owned and operated by D. Scott Brazell, MD who is a board-certified family physician.
Is this covered by my medical insurance?
Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures. Some carriers will, however, cover the treatment of disfiguring birthmarks such as hemangiomas. Consult your insurance carrier for conclusive information. Juvenis Laser & Skin Care Center makes it a policy not to file insurance, however. We will be more than happy to supply you with the necessary information if you desire to file the forms yourself.
What is aesthetics?
Aesthetics services at our center are those that rejuvenate the spirit -- including facials, chemical peels, Microdermabrasions, Photofacials, and hair removal -- all in a safe, medical environment under the supervision of our physicians. These services improve the appearance of the face and body without surgery. An esthetician performs these types of services and is trained in the art of medical skin care and medical skin care products.
We know you will be pleased and rejuvenated by the wonderful services at Juvenis Laser & Skin Care Center. We look forward to seeing you!
How do I know if aesthetics services are right for me?
Before you have any procedures, ask your esthetician how many of these he/she performs on a regular basis. It is important to work with someone who is experienced and who you feel comfortable with.
Discuss the type of procedures you wish to have with your esthetician and ask about any side effects or potential reactions. Be sure to inform him/her about any skin care problems, medical conditions, or medications you are taking. Ask about the successes and results he/she has had with your particular treatment. After discussing these issues with the esthetician, we will prescribe a personalized Skin Care and Esthetics regimen tailored to your special needs.
How do I get started with La Roche-Posay products?
You must first have a skin evaluation to determine your particular skin type based on the La Roche-Posay Skin classification System. Skin classifications include the following types: Environmentally Damaged, Hyperpigmented, Hypersensitive, Acne-Prone, Active Acne, & Sun Exposed. Based on your result, you will be instructed on how to properly care for your skin with the La Roche-Posay Home Treatment Program. The La Roche-Posay Products are especially formulated for each particular skin type. Most importantly, the products are simple, easy to use, and very affordable. The products can be used alone or in conjunction with a La Roche-Posay skin treatment known as the MicroPeel®.
How often would I have this treatment?
Similar to a facial, we recommend a monthly treatment. Depending on your skin type, however, treatments two times a month may produce a more dramatic result.
How will I look after the first treatment?
Unlike a facial, most people will notice a change in the skin right away. You can apply your makeup immediately following the procedure
Can this treatment be bad for my skin?
If you are pregnant, lactating, taking Accutane® or have a chronic history of cold sores, we do not recommend this treatment. You should be aware that since any exfoliation increases photosensitivity to the sun you must use sun protection.
Can I use La Roche-Posay without having a MicroPeel®?
Absolutely! Keep in mind that it will take longer to see results and the effects of the program may be less dramatic.
How much does the La Roche-Posay Program cost?
The La Roche-Posay Home Treatment Program is very affordable. The Home Treatment Kit is $150-$200 depending on your skin type. The cleanser and conditioner will last two to three months. The gels, creams, and sunblocks will last four to six months. The MicroPeel® will vary in price depending on the different areas of your face and body that you may treat. However, generally speaking, the price of a MicroPeel® is consistent with the price of a facial.
What are the benefits of the La Roche-Posay Program?
Skin clarity. Even skin tone. Uniform color. Better texture. In many cases it eliminates the need for cosmetic foundation. And even as preventative medicine; this treatment may help reduce pre-cancerous lesions.
Who can benefit from the La Roche-Posay Program?
Whether your skin is sun damaged, discolored, acne prone, or hypersensitive... a special program will be designed for your specific skin condition.
What makes La Roche-Posay clinically superior?
La Roche-Posay has had many years of experience with thousands of patients to find the safest, most effective way to care for skin. There is an extensive network of La Roche-Posay Associate practitioners. Each has been taught to care for your skin with methods that are technically superior and consistently acclaimed.
